Let’s talk about Scoliosis.
Scoliosis Awareness Month is an important initiative for Health Professionals, patients and the public to start a conversation about Scoliosis.
It’s an opportunity to help us all understand what scoliosis is and how it affects people all around us in the community. It also works towards the public understanding how they can recognise warning signs in their family or friends, and how to seek the right treatment.
Our Key Messages for 2019
- Many people believe scoliosis is a condition which affects only teenage girls. Scoliosis, in fact, affects much more than the widely reported 2-4% of the adolescent population. Significant proportions of infants and children are affected and an estimated 38% of adults aged between 40 and 90 years*
- Early detection and then early intervention leads to better patient outcomes.
- Recognising the signs of a potential scoliosis has never been easier, with free screening tools available for at home or in clinic use, anytime. ScoliScreen is an easy to use online tool. Visit app.scoliscreen.com
- Hearing the personal stories of scoliosis sufferers can help others recognise the signs of scoliosis and understand its impact.
- New non-surgical scoliosis treatment approaches are now available and have proven to be effective in stopping progression and preventing surgery. It is not just bulky braces and surgery any more, so early detection can be acted on with effective early interventions such as specific exercise programs and custom 3D braces.
- School screenings are not currently funded by the government in most countries. This has led to scoliosis being detected at much later stages. Promoting screening within the community and raising awareness are initiative to help increase early detection rates.
